Back in the day when you got four tracks on your 12″!
For some reason he’s listed as Bab.B.Kane for this release and has about 10 different variations on discogs but I’m sticking with Bay B Kane. This guy was seriously prolific and responsible for so many smashers.
Let’s Roll-esque drums and a distinctive bassline lead into a breakdown that sounds to me like a sunrise. This turns a little darker then back to the filth. They don’t make ’em like this any more. I think I remember a Randall mix where he goes into Dead Dred after this, it’s burnt deep into my cerebellum. Probably an AWOL one.
I’m not overly fond of the beats on this track but I always loved the breakdown. It’s the last track on this video, 11:50 onwards.
Fairly sure this is supposed to be ‘Caanan Land’ but who knows, I think I read somewhere Ron was slightly religious. Every noise in this tune is jungle through and through, the beats feel slightly stuttery but this seems to be the build up for the tune to break free at 2.20 and soar. Love it, very special indeed.
DJ Nut Nut, of Special Dedication fame, and Helen T under her Pure Science alias. Heavenly breakdown, hands in the air people.
Rinsed to death but my love for this tune is still there. The mournful emptiness at 3:48 then a slightly more upbeat cheeky bassline at 4:10 followed by some almost happy drums just after make me smile every time. The remix on Moving Shadow was good too but this is the version that gets me every time, somehow it just has more soul.
Quality amenage and a gorgeous sweeping sounds from 1:43 onwards. Tune completely changes at 4:12 and almost sounds like Bukem’s ‘Music’ track. Produced by JMJ & Richie at a time when the Good Looking releases were unmatched. Happy days.
Nookie on the buttons as always and one of my favourite basslines in Drum n Bass. I remember Randall doing some ridiculous mix with this on an AWOL tape.
Mickey Finn @ AWOL (second set of tapes) was 60 minutes of bliss. Every tune was a banger, every mix a delight. This tune was on there and signifies the time, you could still use pianos and not be cheesy with it. Another one that defies time and takes you somewhere else. I wish I could have been there for that set.
